Dedication
This work is dedicated to my wife, Pilma Dollolasa-Cichon, and to our children: Melchor, Jr., Vanessa, Ranel Vincent, and Eugene. I hope that they will also learn to speak Aklanon.

Introduction

This is not a grammar book on Aklanon. Just a guide on how to learn Aklanon the easy way.
This book was intended for my children who cannot speak Aklanon because they have been staying in Iloilo City and in Antique. But then I noticed that there are other people who also want to learn Aklanon, but there is no such book in the market. I hope that this book will help them, as well as promote Aklan.
This book is my legacy to my fellow Aklanons.
If you think that there are some slips in this work, please let me know. My email address is: gumamilacruz@yahoo.com ..

Acknowledgment
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to my wife for her understanding and to our children who have been my inspirations. Also Dr. Corazon Acebuque, and to all Aklanons all over the world.
I would also like to express my thanks to the authors of A Study of the Aklanon dialect, Vol. Two Dictionary (of root words and derivations) Aklanon to English) by Vicente Salas Reyes, Nicolas L. Prado and R. David Paul Zorc. Kalibo, Aklan, 1969.) This is my main reference in this book.

***************

If you can pronounce these simple words, you are an Aklanon. If not, you really need this book.
Try these.
But before that, pronounce first the words at the Hiligaynon column then pronounce their Aklanon equivalents.
Hiligaynon Aklanon
Balay Baeay
Kasal Kasae
Bongol Bongoe
Sugal Sugae
Balo Baeo

How did you find them?

Very easy, right?

But if not, do not worry.

Just follow the simple instruction that I will provide later. Very soon you will learn how to speak Aklanon as if you were a native of Aklan.
In the above examples, when you said , Balay, Kasal, Bongol, Balo and Sugal, you would have noticed that your tongue lifted up as you pronounced the letter L.
Now say Balo again.
Or just the letter L.
Now say the letter E. If you will not move or lift your tongue as you pronounce the letter E in the Aklanon column, then you will be able to pronounce the Aklanon words as if you were an Aklanon.
Did you notice the movement of your tongue?
You would also have noticed that the letter L in the above words in the Hiligaynon Column were changed to letter E in the Aklanon Column.
Generally this is the case.
The Letter L in the Hiligaynon words are changed to E.
But not always.
In Aklanon there are words that have letter L like Bala (bullet), Balete (a town in Aklan), Balde (bucket).
My theory is that the pre-Spanish Aklanon words have no letter L.
As you go along, you will notice that many Aklanon words with letter L are not native Aklanon words. Hence we have balde, bilding, bala, pusil, etc. These are all foreign words.
Going back to our examples.

That is the simple technique in pronouncing the Aklanon words with ea, eo, oe, ei, ie words.
Again, try reading these words:

Ro baeay sa may baybay
Naghapay bangod
Puno it kaeamay.

Ro anwang gaeogaeog
Sa eugan-eugan
Agod mapreskuhan.

Ro kaeamay gaeapuyot
Sa kaeaha
Maski butangan pa’t mantika.

Polite Words in Aklanon

Like all other languages, Aklanon has polite words too. The Tagalogs use Paki, the Ilonggos use Palihog, the English speakers use Please. Aklanons use anay and ha, and they usually say them in a low voice. Anay is usually placed after the pronouns (mo, ako, nana, ninyo, etc.).
But Aklanons have also adopted Palihog, the Hiligaynon word for please. Aklanons also use kon pwede eang in their requests.
But anay can also be used as an equivalent to “first” or “for the time being.”
Iabot mo anay rang lapis. Please hand me my pencil.
Daehon mo anay rang bag. Please bring my bag.
Bakean mo anay it tinapay si Nanay. Please buy bread for Nanay.
Ginbaryan anay nana rang plete. He first paid my fare.
Kon pwede, daehon mo rang eambong. If possible, please bring along my clothes.

Use the following words in the sentence:
Nakabaton (received)
Nakahuyap (counted)
Nakapasa (passed)
Maka-inum (can drink)
Makabakae (can buy)

The use of the Dash ( _ )

The dash is used to show an internal glottal stop before or after a consonant:
Sin-o (who)
Gae-om (cloud)
An-om (six)
Bi-bi (edge)
Ap-at (four)

A dash is also used to separate a prefix ending in a consonant from a root word:

Manog-inum (drinker)
Nag-uean (rained)
Gin-isoe (moved)
Pag-aku (accept)
Tig-ueuean (rainy season)

Amon (Ours)

Amon is usually written at the beginning of a sentence. For a change, use namon, but you have to put it after a noun or a verb.
Amon ron.
That’s ours.
Ro amon nga baeay hay maeapit sa baybay.
Our house is near the shore.
Ro amon nga simbahan hay dumaan.
Our church is ancient.
Kon Paskwa ro amon nga baeay hay may parol
On Christmas Season, our house has parols.

Namon is a substitute of amon.

Ro baeay namon hay maeapit sa baybay.
Ro simbahan namon hay dumaan.
Kon Paskwa ro baeay namon hay may parol.
Ginsag-ahan namon ro kanae.
Ro baeay namon hay maeapit sa Akean.

Aton (Ours) and Naton (Ours)

Aton ron nga lamesa.
That table is ours.
Lamesa naton ron
That table is ours.
Ro baeay nga puea hay aton.
The red house is ours.
Ro aton nga kantahon hay My First Romance.
We will sing My First Romance.
Now instead of using aton, we will use Naton without losing any meaning except the style.
Lamesa ron naton.
Kantahon naton ro My First Romance.
Baeay naton ro baeay nga puea.
In the following sentences, change Aton to Naton
Aton ron nga lapis.
Hin-aga ro aton nga torno.

Inyo (Your(s)) (Ninyo, Your(s))

Inyo ro baeay ngara?
Is this your house?
Inyo ra nga baeay
Is this house yours?

Is that your house?

Inyo nga kabayo ron?

2. Kamatis ninyo ra?
3. Gin-ano ninyo ro sawa?
4. Alinon ninyo rang kabayo?

Anda (Their) and Nanda (Their(s))

Anda and Nanda can be used interchangeably and get the same meaning. But be careful in using them to make your sentences logical.
Anda ron nga lamesa.
That is their house.
Anda ron nga lamesa?
Is this house theirs?
Lamesa nanda ron.
That is their table.
Lamesa nanda ron?

The use of Akon (Mine, I, My)

Akon nga ginsueat ron. I wrote that.
Akon ron nga ginbakae. I bought that.
Akon ron. That is mine.
Akon ron nga kwarta. That is my money.
Akon ron nga ayam. That is my dog.
Akon ra nga kuring. This is my cat.

You will notice that Akon is not usually written at the end of the sentence. If we do that, the sentence becomes awkward, unless we make some changes in the wordings.

For example. Akon ron nga kwarta. (That is my money).

Now if we put akon at the end of the sentence, it would look like this: Kwarta ron akon. To remedy it, we have to rewrite it: Ro kwarta ngaron hay akon. Still, it is awkward.

Translate the following sentences into English.

Akon ron.
Akon ron nga gintanum.
Akon ron nga manok.

Nakon (Mine, I, My)

Nakon is usually written immediately after a noun or a verb, while akon is usually written at the beginning of the sentence.

Gender Differentiation in Aklanon Words

Aklanon words usually have no sex differentiation. Here are some Aklanon words which you cannot distinguish whether the person being talked about is a male or a female: Imaw, Onga, Ana, Anda.

Put an abjective to make these words clear. Example: Onga nga baye o eaki.
For imaw (he/she), ana (his/her), and anda (they), use them after the person(s) being talked about.

Ana (his/Her)

Always put ana at the beginning of a sentence, otherwise you have to change it to nana.

Ana ron nga lamesa. That is his/her table.
Ana ron nga nobya. That is his/her girlfriend.

For a style, change ana to nana. But you have to put nana in the other part of the sentence. Example:

Lamesa nana ron.
Nobya nana ron.

Write two sentences each using ana and nana with the following words:

Baso (glass)
Tuba (coconut wine)
Imo (Your) Nimo (Your)

Imo and nimo can be used interchangeably without changing the meaning of the sentence.

Imo ra nga baeay?
Is this your house?
Baeay nimo ra?

Imo ron nga lapis?
Is that your pencil?
Lapis nimo ra?

Imo ron nga baboy?
Is that your pig?
Baboy nimo ra?

Baeay kuno nimo ra?
Is it true that this house is yours?
Ginbakae nimo ro sapatos?
Did you buy the shoes?

Did you drop my letter (at the post office)?

The Use of Hay

Hay is one of the unique features of Aklanon language. It seems that it is a corrupted word of Hi! of the Japanese because it is also used as a greeting.
Actually, Hay in Aklanon is used as a predicate or “news” in the sentence; it is sometimes used as the “is”; and when it is used in an interjection, it is translated into “ah” or “oh”.
Hay is also used in interogative sentence.

Examples:

Si Pedro hay owa katapus it pagtuon.
Pedro did not finish his studies.
Ro libro ngara hay imo.
This book is yours.
Hay, mabuot ka gali.
Oh, you are good.
Madueom eon, hay ano ring obrahon?
Now that it’s already dark, what will you do?
Hay, ano eon?
Oh, what now?
Hay, iya ka gali?
Oh, you are here?
Si Alfreo hay masadya.
Alfreo is happy.

3. Ro buhok ni Mary hay mahaba.
4. Kabay pa nga ro mga Aleman hay mag-amigo sa mga Intsik.
5. Rang Nanay hay maestra.

Interogative Sentences

In Aklanon, a declarative sentence can be turned into an interrogative sentence by just changing the period at the end of the sentence to a question mark, and by changing the tone of the voice of the speaker; provided however, that the sentence is simple and short.

Examples:

Baeay ko ra. This is my house.
Baeay ko ra? Is this my house?
Tan-awon ko rang email. I will check my email.
Tan-awon ko rang email? Will I check my email?
Masustansiya ro tinapay. The bread is nutritious.
Masustansiya ro tinapay? Is the bread nutritious?
Ginhaboy ko ron. I threw that.
Ginhaboy ko ron? Did I throw that?

Pushing The Night

You see him around
In tattered clothes, barefooted
Pushing his crooked cart
For an honest living
In a blind city.

He lights his kerosene lamp to push the night
In his see-through home.
But the wind keeps on blowing it out.
Like his cart
He keeps on pushing the night
To know the common dawn.

Introduction

I sometimes find difficulty in composing Aklanon poem, especially the luwa because this needs rhymes.
To solve this, I compiled Aklanon words that have rhymes.
The words here are arranged by the last two or three letters of the word.
This is just an initial work.
To get the meaning of the words, please consult any of these dictionaries : A Study of the Aklanon dialect, vol. 2: Dictionary by Vicente Salas Reyes et al., 1969
De la Cruz, Roman A. five-Language Dictionary (panya): english, tagalong, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Aklanon. Kalibo, Aklan: Rock Publishing. 919p.

Thanks to Libtong and Toryo for their contributions.
